My ENG 103 Research Plan #1

Thesis Statement: Based on several sources I will argue that the portrayal of altruism in Roger Mitchell's "Enduring Love" shows the difficulty of cooperating together based on selfish genes.

Two sources needed: I want to buy the book to the film just to delve deeper into the story and its explanations as well as the emotions behind the actions. The movie only goes so far so I would like to get a hold of the book and read into it. Another source I need is an article written by someone or a detailed paper about the topic.

I will be using LexisNexis as well as Gale to find my sources as well as more sources to push the paper and to push my argument as well as back up my claims.

  1. That thesis statement is excellent. Now you need to find sources including Dawkins and Judson from the Course Pack that set up the discussion of whether humans are more competitive (Dawkins) and less altruistic or more cooperative (Judson) and more altruistic. And then decide what the movie's argument is about this.

You already have the relevant chapter from the book with "Us or Me" from the course pack. (The first chapter of Enduring Love the novel is almost exactly the same.) So don't worry about finding the novel. (I have a copy and could Xerox the first chapter for you, but like I said, it's the same words.)

You can find film reviews of Enduring Love on LexisNexis. For the NY Times review, you can search through Google with these exact terms: [enduring love film review site:www.nytimes.com ] Neat trick to restrict the site in Google with site:???????

Hope this helps. You have a GREAT topic. I hope you will dig in and finish this over the next few weeks! --Prof. Dragan
